Parents of members of the LGBT community unwillingly find themselves in the closet once their son or daughter tells them they are gay. At some point, they too have to come out to the world around them. Yet in many countries, being open about their children is out of the question due to enormous social stigmas or anti-gay laws. Parents in particular find themselves stuck between society’s need to conformity and boundless love for their sons and daughters.

MY BROTHER tells the story of a young Spanish, Alberto, who have fled as far as possible from her conservative family. He lives in Berlin with her partner, and works as an illustrator of comics. But an unexpected event forces him to return to his suffocating Castilian village and confront not only their own origins but lies who created to survive. To save his guilty he will try to change the future of their tragedy through fiction, as best he can do, drawing. It is a story that takes us from a cosmopolitan, artistic and free world into a deep and hypocritical Spain, that still remains depressed despite the achievements of our society.

Set against the backdrop of the recent xenophobic attacks, we encounter two men from totally different worlds. Aben, an Indian South African who owns a take-away restaurant in the predominantly Muslim community of Fordsburg, and Tariq, a Pakistani immigrant who makes a living selling freshly grounded sugar-cane juice from a street corner. The sugar cane connects the two men – Aben haunted by his childhood memories in the sugar cane fields of Tongaat and Tariq, a recent migrant, representative of new hierarchies of labour (and class) in South Africa.

Music video Same Love – Remix (Kenya) dir:Art Attack, 5:41 mins

A Kenyan music video of an African-themed remix of American hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ marriage equality anthem “Same Love”: it became a song about LGBTIQ rights and struggles, gender equalities and civil liberties for all sexual orientations across Africa.

The Kenya Film Classification Board banned it in February 2016.
